It seems as though the zombie craze has made its way to the land down under. Authorities in Papua New Guinea have arrested 29 individuals accused of being a part of a cannibalistic cult and murdering 7 people within the last week.
According to The National newspaper in the region, Madang Police Commander, Anthony Wagambie, explained that the cult members ate their victims brains raw and made soup from their penises. Wagambie told the Associated Press, “They don’t think they’ve done anything wrong; they admit what they’ve done openly.”
The commander explained that the cult members believed that their victims practiced “sanguma”, or sorcery, and were extorting money and sex from the poor locals in exchange for their supernatural services. The cult justified their actions, explaining that eating the witch doctors organs would make them bulletproof.
Wagambie believes that there could be anywhere between 700-1,000 cult members in several of the villages in Papua New Guinea, insisting that cult activity is very popular in the region.
The National newspaper reported that 28 men and women appeared in court on Tuesday and were charged with willful murder. Wagambie suspects that he will make over 100 arrests for cult-related crimes over the weekend.
The police will be gathering witnesses before making any charges to the cannibal allegations. Murder is a crime punishable by death in Papua New Guinea.
Four of the seven victims were murdered last week and Wagambie added that their remains have still not been found, insisting, “They’re probably all eaten up.”
Penis soup, anyone? I am so dying for some of that.
